Learning

Shetland Islands Council’s ICT service has developed a resilient wireless network across the isles, in order to replace the Pathfinder system, which was switched off in 2014 after six years of providing connections to council properties across the isles. A replacement network, described as innovative, cost-effective and flexible, was created using commercial masts, fibre and satellite technology. It links around 60 sites from Unst to Fair Isle.

Connectivity to all Council and partner organisation sites across Shetland, to enable the delivery of central ICT systems including email, internet, and telephony.

The benefits are that the Council now owns the most of its wide area network, instead of leasing/contracting with third parties.  This has led to a significant revenue saving.

It is possible to ‘go it alone’.
